I was 18 years old—still a freshman in college—when I was convicted of my first felony. This first conviction completely changed the course of my life and, from then on, I was in and out of prison on a range of charges. My most recent conviction for a non-violent drug charge yielded a 144-month sentence in state prison. While I was away, I saw first-hand the need for programmatic interventions that were more responsive to the challenges that incarcerated individuals face as they seek to reintegrate into society. The Peter Harris Outreach Center was my idea for creating meaningful support for returning citizens, shaped by people who have the lived experience of reentering civic life after lengthy incarceration.
